See a Clearer Picture: Advanced 3D Imaging for Precise Diagnosis

Traditional 2D dental X-rays provide a flat view of your smile, which can hide important details. But what if we could see your teeth, jaw, and delicate facial structures in comprehensive, three-dimensional detail? At Meadowbrook Dental, our commitment to providing the highest standard of care for our patients in Plainview and across Long Island includes investing in the most advanced diagnostic tool available: 3D Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).

3D dental imaging is a revolutionary technology that creates a highly accurate, three-dimensional digital model of your anatomy. In a single, quick scan, a machine rotates around your head, capturing hundreds of images that are then reconstructed into a 3D view. This allows us to see your teeth, bone density, nerve pathways, and sinus cavities with a level of clarity that is impossible with a standard X-ray.

The power of this precise diagnosis is that it elevates the safety and predictability of numerous dental procedures, including:

  1. Dental Implant Planning: It is the absolute gold standard for planning implant placement. We can measure the exact height and width of your jawbone and map out the safest position for the implant, avoiding nerves and sinuses.

  2. Wisdom Tooth Extractions: A 3D view allows us to see the exact position of an impacted wisdom tooth in relation to major nerves, ensuring the safest possible surgical extraction.

  3. Complex Root Canal Therapy: For teeth with complex or unusual root canal anatomy, a 3D scan helps us visualize the entire system for a more thorough and successful treatment.

  4. Oral Pathology: It allows for the detailed assessment of cysts, tumors, and other abnormalities within the jaw.

Your Questions About 3D Dental Imaging Answered

1. Is a 3D CBCT scan safe? What about the radiation? Yes, it is very safe. While a CBCT scan provides exponentially more data than a 2D X-ray, the radiation dose is significantly lower than a traditional medical CT scan. We adhere to the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable), meaning we only recommend a 3D scan when the diagnostic information is essential for ensuring the safety and success of your treatment.

2. Why do I need a 3D scan instead of a regular X-ray? A regular 2D X-ray is excellent for routine check-ups and diagnosing cavities. However, for any procedure that involves the underlying bone and vital structures, like placing an implant or removing an impacted tooth, a 2D image is insufficient. It cannot show depth or accurately reveal the location of nerves. A 3D scan is necessary for precise planning and is the modern standard of care for surgical dentistry.

3. How long does the scan take? The scan itself is very fast and completely painless. You will be asked to sit or stand still for about 10-20 seconds while the machine quietly rotates around your head. That's it.

4. Do I need to do anything special to prepare for the scan? No special preparation is needed. We will simply ask you to remove any metal objects from your head and neck area, such as glasses, jewelry, and hearing aids, as they can interfere with the image.

5. Will my insurance cover a CBCT scan? When a CBCT scan is deemed medically necessary for planning a covered procedure like a surgical extraction or a dental implant, it is often a benefit covered by dental insurance plans. Our team will gladly review your plan and help you understand your coverage.

3. More Predictable, Successful Outcomes: Better planning leads to better results. The detailed information from a 3D scan allows us to perform procedures more efficiently and with greater accuracy, which directly translates to a more predictable and successful long-term outcome for your dental work.

4. Comprehensive In-House Capabilities: We offer the convenience of having this advanced imaging technology right here in our office. This saves you a trip to an outside imaging center and allows us to have instant access to the crucial data we need to plan your care.

5. Empowering Patients with Information: We can use your 3D scan to show you a detailed model of your own anatomy, helping you to better understand your condition and the proposed treatment plan. We believe an informed patient is an empowered patient.
