Your First-Aid Guide for a Dental Emergency in Nassau County

Dental emergencies are sudden, painful, and often occur at the worst possible time. In the first moments of panic after a tooth gets knocked out or a severe toothache begins, it’s hard to think clearly. But what you do in those first few minutes can make a world of difference; sometimes even saving a tooth that would otherwise be lost.

This is your calm, clear first-aid guide. Follow these simple steps to manage the most common dental emergencies, and then call our Nassau County dental office immediately.

The Most Urgent Emergency: A Knocked-Out Adult Tooth

If an adult tooth is completely knocked out, time is critical. There is a "golden hour" where the chances of successfully re-implanting the tooth are highest.

Find the Tooth. Locate it quickly and pick it up by the crown (the chewing surface). NEVER touch the root.
Gently Rinse, If Needed. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently for a few seconds with milk or a gentle stream of water. Do not scrub, soap, or wipe the tooth.
Try to Reinsert It. If possible, gently push the tooth back into its socket. Hold it in place by biting down softly on a clean piece of gauze or cloth.
Keep it Moist. If you cannot reinsert it, the tooth must stay moist. Place it in a small container of milk or tucked into your cheek pouch (if the person is old enough not to swallow it). Do NOT store it in plain water.

For a Badly Cracked, Broken, or Chipped Tooth

A broken or cracked tooth can range from a minor cosmetic issue to a severe emergency. Here's what to do.

Rinse Your Mouth. Immediately rinse your mouth with warm salt water to clean the area.
Apply a Cold Compress. Press a cold pack or a cloth-wrapped bag of ice against your cheek or lip over the broken tooth. This will help reduce swelling and ease pain.
Save Any Large Pieces. If you can find the broken piece(s) of the tooth, save them in a small container of milk and bring them with you to your appointment.
Call Our Office. A badly broken tooth can expose the sensitive inner pulp and requires immediate attention to prevent infection and save the tooth.

For a Severe Toothache and Facial Swelling

A severe, throbbing toothache is often a sign of a deep cavity or, more urgently, an infection or abscess.

Rinse Vigorously. Swish vigorously with warm salt water. This can help dislodge any food particles that might be wedged and causing the pain.
Floss Gently. Carefully try to floss around the affected tooth to remove any trapped debris.
Use a Cold Compress. Apply a cold pack to the outside of your cheek to help manage the pain and any swelling.
Important: What NOT to Do. Do NOT place aspirin or any painkiller directly against your gums, as it can burn the tissue. Do NOT apply heat, as this can draw out and worsen an infection.
Call Us Immediately. A toothache combined with swelling in your face or a small, pimple-like bump on your gum is a sign of a serious infection that needs immediate professional treatment.
