Dental Emergency Plainview NY: What to Do Now (Step-by-Step Guide)

Learn immediate steps to take during dental emergencies including knocked-out teeth, broken teeth, and severe pain, and discover how Meadowbrook provides urgent same-day care.
Dental emergencies happen: here's what to do immediately
Dental emergencies are some of the most stressful situations people face because they combine pain, uncertainty, and potential cosmetic damage. When a tooth cracks, gets knocked out, or you develop sudden severe pain, knowing what to do in the first few minutes can mean the difference between saving your tooth and losing it forever. At Meadowbrook Dental Care in Plainview and Mineola, we provide same-day emergency dental care for urgent situations like these. Our team is available to get you relief and fix your tooth quickly.
The most critical thing to do during a dental emergency is call Meadowbrook Dental immediately. We keep appointment slots open for emergencies every day, and we'll get you in fast. If you call during business hours, we'll have you in the chair within hours. If it's after hours, our phone system will provide instructions for emergency care and urgent resources. But beyond calling us, here's what to do for specific emergency scenarios. For our complete emergency dentistry information, visit our emergency dentistry page.

Knocked out tooth (avulsed tooth): act within 1 hour
If a tooth is completely knocked out, it's potentially saveable if you act fast. The first hour is critical for successful replantation. Here's what to do:
Step 1: Find the Tooth. Locate the tooth on the ground or surface where it fell. Handle it carefully by the crown (the white part), never by the root (the bottom part). Touching the root can damage the delicate ligament fibers that help the tooth reattach to bone.
Step 2: Rinse Gently. Rinse the tooth under cool running water for a few seconds to remove dirt or debris. Do not use soap or aggressively scrub the tooth. If it's extremely dirty, you can pick off gross debris with a tissue, but never scrub.
Step 3: Replant or Store Properly. The best scenario is to replant the tooth back into its socket immediately. If you can do this without hurting yourself, gently push the tooth back in, aligning the crown with surrounding teeth. Bite down gently on gauze to hold it in place, then go to the emergency dentist immediately. If you can't replant it, store the tooth in milk or your own saliva (in a clean container) if available. If not, store it in water as a last resort. Never store a tooth in regular water for more than a few minutes as osmotic damage can occur. Time is critical; get to Meadowbrook Dental immediately.
Step 4: Call Plainview Emergency (516) 239-1839 or Mineola Emergency (516) 741-2600. Tell the team it's a knocked-out tooth emergency. We'll prioritize your appointment and prepare to reimplant your tooth.
Broken or chipped tooth: containment & care
A cracked or broken tooth is less immediately critical than a knocked-out tooth, but it still requires urgent attention to prevent infection and further damage. Here's what to do:
Step 1: Rinse with Warm Salt Water. Mix 1 teaspoon salt in 8 ounces of warm water and rinse your mouth gently. This cleans the area and reduces infection risk.
Step 2: Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relief. If you have pain, take ibuprofen (400-600mg) or acetaminophen (500-1000mg) as directed on the package. These reduce pain and inflammation.
Step 3: Apply Cold Compress. Apply ice wrapped in a cloth to the outside of your cheek near the damaged tooth for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off. This reduces swelling and pain.
Step 4: Save Any Tooth Fragments. If pieces of your tooth broke off, collect them and store in milk or a small container. Sometimes we can bond these fragments back onto your tooth.
Step 5: Call Meadowbrook Dental. Call Plainview (516) 239-1839 or Mineola (516) 741-2600 and describe the damage. We'll get you in quickly, typically within hours. If a large part of your tooth is missing or the tooth is mobile, seek same-day emergency care.
Step 6: Avoid Chewing That Tooth. Don't chew on the damaged tooth; use the other side of your mouth. Avoid hard, sticky, or very hot foods that could cause further damage or pain.

Severe tooth pain, abscess, or swelling
Sudden severe tooth pain, facial swelling, or pus discharge indicates infection and requires urgent treatment. These symptoms can indicate an abscess (bacterial infection at the tooth root) that can spread if left untreated.
Step 1: Call Meadowbrook Dental Immediately. Serious infections require professional treatment. Call Plainview (516) 239-1839 or Mineola (516) 741-2600 immediately, even if it's evening or weekend. We provide same-day emergency appointments for infections.
Step 2: Pain Management While Waiting. Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed on the package. Apply a warm compress (not ice) to the outside of your cheek to encourage drainage and comfort. Some patients find relief by avoiding very hot or cold foods.
Step 3: Rinse with Salt Water. Rinse with warm salt water every 2 to 3 hours to help cleanse the infected area.
Step 4: Watch for Warning Signs. If you develop fever, significant facial swelling, difficulty swallowing, or difficulty breathing, go to the emergency room immediately. These signs indicate the infection may be spreading beyond the tooth and requires urgent medical care beyond dental treatment.
Step 5: Take Antibiotics if Prescribed. If Dr. Casañas prescribes antibiotics, take the full course as directed even if you feel better. Don't stop taking them early or the infection may return. For information about root canal treatment, visit our root canal treatment page.

Managing other dental emergencies & getting help
Lost crown or filling situations require immediate attention. If your crown or filling falls out, call us immediately. We'll clean the area and temporarily seal it to protect the tooth until we can place a new restoration. Wire or bracket damage for orthodontic patients means you should contact us if your Invisalign aligner is lost, broken, or uncomfortable, or if your braces have broken wire. We'll repair or adjust your appliance.
Mouth or jaw injury from trauma requires emergency medical care first. If you have a serious mouth injury from trauma or accident, seek emergency medical care at an urgent care or emergency room first. Once medical treatment is addressed, we'll handle any dental damage. After-hours emergencies are addressed through our phone system which will provide information for emergency care and urgent resources in Plainview and Mineola.
